AI Engineering Lead

We are looking for an AI Engineering Lead. This profile is responsible for managing a team of 3+ engineers, ensuring successful execution of team-level projects by overseeing engineering management and workflow optimization. They contribute to team success by executing projects efficiently, optimizing workflows and developing team members’ skills.

Summary: An AI Engineering Lead at TechWolf manages a team of 3+ engineers, balancing hands-on technical work with people leadership and workflow optimization. They oversee the successful delivery of team-level projects, architect solutions for future scalability, and ensure team efficiency through process improvements. This role involves hiring, mentoring, and developing talent, while fostering alignment with other teams. As a player-coach, the Lead sets high standards for execution, drives team performance, and creates the conditions for sustained, impactful delivery.

What you'll do:

• Raise the talent bar — Is a new people and hiring manager, and is able to hire team members with the guidance and support of a more experienced people manager. Is able to recognise excellence and underperformance, despite needing prompting and support at times.

• Execute and Architect for the future — Acts as a player coach and is able to prioritise and delegate on key projects within their team. Is able to set bar raising objectives for their direct reports, and lead execution on specific projects.

• Engineering Management — Oversees small technical projects, balancing player-coach responsibilities while managing a team of 3+ engineers. Ensures successful project delivery within the team.

• Project Management — Plans and organizes the execution of team-level projects, ensuring they are completed within the defined timeframe and budget.

• Workflow Optimization — Analyzes team workflows to improve efficiency and productivity at the team level.

• Cross Functional Coordination — Collaborates with other teams to ensure alignment on small-scale projects.

Who you are:

• You are proficient in Python and the AI stack (numpy, transformers, LLMs, etc.).

• You have at least 4–5 years of relevant experience delivering impactful AI systems, and a decent portion of that leading or coaching engineers.

• You are able to plan and oversee execution of team-level projects, optimizing workflows for efficiency.

• You can effectively hire, mentor, and develop team members, and provide constructive performance feedback.

• You are able to articulate complex technical and organizational trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• You're based in Belgium and excited to work together with the TechWolf team in our Ghent office at least three days per week.
